Why Whales..?

Thank you very much for visiting my site.

I am Oktay Kaya and live in New Hampshire in USA.

Photography has been an important part of my life for nearly 25 years... Landscape and city architecture photography were my favorites until I saw my first whale up close 5 years ago in Quebec, at Point Noir while I was visiting the GREMM ( Group for Research and Education for Marine Mammals) observation post...  I was not aware that things were about to change for me forever...  A Minke whale surfaced 10 yards away from me while I was looking for Belugas...  This is the first whale picture I had ever taken, without even looking through the viewfinder.

I was caught completely by surprise; I had heard his blow, had seen how the water saluted him, had seen the sun reflect off of his back, and felt the power and softness...  My mind, my eyes, and my heart were taken far away, to where crazy rivers meet oceans; where a Mediterranean breeze dances around flames on Mount Olympus; where the starry, cool night of the Sahara turns into endless heat; where nymphs dance in an unearthed amphitheater in Sydme; where the Kybele watches the misty Anatolian day passing by... The gracefulness of this gentle giant truly amazed me...

It was an invitation to tranquility, beauty, requiem, harmony, and peace...  Since then whales have become my favorite subject for photography...  Since then I've started to study them, observe them and have tried to learn from them...  Every step attracted me more...  Every trip made me plan another trip...  Every glimpse of Northern Right whales made me think, "What are we going to tell our grandchildren?"...  How can we explain that the greed of some countries undermined the endless efforts of whale-friendly groups?

On this site you may not see many glamorous pictures, but you may see the whales' desire to survive, struggle, passion, daily routine, joy, pain, wounds, feelings, willingness to share with others; living in harmony and peace...  You may see them try to reach out to our minds, our souls...  We have a lot to learn from these magnificent giants, these bighearted souls...

I also added two pages which are not whale related:  moose and birdies...  I hope you will enjoy them, too...

Come with me to this endless journey to

Harmony and Peace...
